The border between Canada and USA will remain closed to non-essential travel until at least November 21, 2020.

On October 12, the US reached 8 million total confirmed cases of Covid-19 and the numbers continue to increase.

On October 15, according to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the US-Canada borders will remain closed until the coronavirus gets under control in the US. It’s most likely the border closure agreement will be extended after it expires next week on October 21.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recognized it is necessary to get the situation under control especially with the approach of the winter and the flu season. The graph below shows the average of new cases from October 9 to 15 in:

  • Canada (country)
  • Ontario (province) and 
  • the cities of Toronto, Ottawa, Region of Peel and City of Hamilton

The coronavirus cases have seen a spike after a COVID-19 outbreak at a spin studio downtown Hamilton, which is connected to at least 72 cases in the city as of October 16. Due to this incident, Public Health is reconsidering the gym guidelines and safety measures in the province.

The graph below shows the age distribution (%) of confirmed cases in Ontario on October 15. The most affected age groups remain as following:
  • 20 to 39 age group
  • 40 to 59 age group

Confirmed cases of young people of schooling age in elementary and high schools in the Province of Ontario remain small in comparison.

The graph below shows the age distribution (%) of confirmed cases in Hamilton from October 6 to 15. The most affected age groups continue to be:
  • 20 to 39 age group
  • 40 to 59 age group

Confirmed cases of young people of schooling age in elementary and high schools in the City of Hamilton are lower than the provincial average, 12% vs 14%.
